To achieve growth, it is crucial to address the challenges that companies encounter when it comes to creating value in the economy and society. These challenges include issues like a shortage of skilled workers and intense competition for talent, and should be addressed in a timely and effective manner.
Building on provisions in the Commission’s proposal for the platform work directive and most recent discussions on AI Act, it is of utter importance to foster understanding and build know-how on complex matters surrounding data issues such as fairness and transparency, ownership and control, regulation and innovation.
As AI continues to transform industries and job markets, Reshaping Work recognizes the pressing need for informed dialogue and action to help stakeholders grasp the impact of AI at work and adapt to the changing AI-driven landscape.
We can expect 2024 to be a pivotal year when it comes to regulating AI. With the EU heading into elections next June, agreements on legislative proposals such as the AI Act and the Platform Work Directive are likely to be reached before the battalion is handed over to a new EU Parliament. In this regulatory transition it is paramount to tackle how compliance will look and to bring special attention to how this technology is making its way into the world of work.
The 2024 Dialogue on AI Impacts at Work is reaching out to a broad spectrum of stakeholders. This includes policymakers and regulators responsible for shaping AI deployment policies, trade unions and worker representatives advocating for worker rights, and business leaders and innovators adapting to the AI-driven landscape. Additionally, we engage with academics, AI experts, and technology providers, along with advocacy groups and civil society representatives. By bringing these diverse stakeholders together, we aim to foster collaboration and address the multifaceted challenges and opportunities presented by AI in the workplace.
By convening a diverse range of stakeholders, our mission is: to empower policymakers with the knowledge and tools needed for effective regulation of AI deployment in the workplace; and to enhance trade unions’ capabilities for meaningful social dialogues on AI’s impact, ultimately safeguarding worker rights. Simultaneously, we aim to bolster businesses’ adaptability for responsible AI innovation, providing a platform in the 2024 Dialogue to help them align with critical policy processes such as the AI Act and algorithmic transparency in the Platform Work Directive, exploring strategies for compliance.
Additionally, we will reflect on the need for a separate directive on AI at Work, which has been raised by current European Commissioner of Social Affairs, Nicolas Schmit, as a possible next step to address gaps in existing legislative proposals.
AI’s transformative impact on the workplace has not yet received the attention it deserves within regulatory frameworks. The 2024 Dialogue on AI Impacts at Work is a timely initiative that addresses this issue, ensuring that the future of work is protected against AI’s risks. This Dialogue is a unique opportunity to proactively address the current regulatory gaps in AI policy. It’s a chance to shape the future of work and to ensure that AI’s impact is understood, harnessed, and regulated effectively. We anticipate that this topic will play a defining role in future regulations, and we are dedicated to preparing stakeholders for this transition.
