As part of the festive 2025 edition of the KU Leuven AI Summer School, we are opening our doors to the public! Join us on the afternoon of Friday 4 July 2025 for two discussions on AI policy, globally and in Europe.
Session 1: AI governance around the globe, 14:30 to 16:00 CEST
When it comes to regulating AI, much attention is given to the European Union’s AI Act. However, governments across the world are developing their own AI policies and could bring refreshing insights to the debate. Therefore, for the third year in a row, we are organising a roundtable that will focus on AI governance perspectives beyond the EU, spanning Latin America, Africa, China, and the US. We will explore which regulatory efforts are made in these regions, discuss global AI policies from a comparative stance and examine what we can learn from the different perspectives on AI around the world.
Our speakers include
Carolina Aguerre (Universidad Católica del Uruguay),
Aziz Huq (University of Chicago),
Zhiyu Li (Durham University) and
Jake Okechukwu Effoduh (Toronto Metropolitan University). The roundtable will be chaired by
Nathalie Smuha (KU Leuven). After a brief presentation by each speaker on the state of AI governance in their respective jurisdiction, we will have moderated discussion and a Q&A session with the audience.
Session 2: The Future of AI in Europe, 16:30 to 17:45 CEST
Now that the European Union adopted the AI Act, where is its future headed? Which direction and shape will the technology take in Europe, and what will be the role of AI regulation in the coming years? Join us for keynote speech by
Lucilla Sioli, the Director of the
EU’s AI Office, who will shed light on these questions with a talk about the Future of AI (Regulation) in Europe. Her speech will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience, moderated by
Nathalie Smuha (KU Leuven).
