Mental Health in the Workplace: Strengthening Employment Rights and Tackling the Drivers of Work-Related Mental Ill-Health
Mental health challenges in the UK workplace have reached alarming levels. Recent research highlights a 75% rise in anxiety and depression among employees, with 79% experiencing moderate-to-high stress and burnout affecting 15% of the workforce. Young people and women report the highest stress levels, while financial pressure has become the leading external stressor, affecting work performance and sleep. The economic toll is significant, costing the UK £57.4 billion annually. Yet, investment in mental wellbeing offers a high return, with every £1 spent yielding £4.70 in productivity gains.
In response, the UK government has committed to substantial reforms, including a new Employment Rights Bill and investment in NHS mental health staff. Prominent initiatives like Young Futures hubs aim to offer accessible support to young people. Against this backdrop, this symposium brings together employers, mental health professionals, policymakers, and employee representatives to explore the current state of workplace mental health, review ongoing policies and programmes, and chart a path forward for improving mental wellbeing across the UK workforce.
