Martijn Müller is founder and delivery driver at Bestellenbij.nl, a grassroots cooperative meal delivery platform in the Netherlands. A delivery driver for platforms Deliveroo and Uber Eats since 2018, Martijn recognized both the opportunities and the downfalls of food delivery platforms and in 2020 he set out together with fellow delivery drivers to do better.
After a successful small-scale pilot, Bestellenbij.nl was officially launched in Nijmegen in September 2022 and set to expand across the nation by the end of the year. Bestellenbij is a grassroots cooperative platform, which means that the delivery drivers are the primary stakeholders, and together they lead the company as co-owners of the platform. Opting to bootstrap most of the financial costs of development instead of seeking outside investment and making investors stakeholders in the organization, Bestellenbij intends to have a more sustainable business model that doesn’t rely on aggressive business practices. Martijn and his fellow riders want to create a platform that is more fair to the riders and the restaurants. Because they are both the workers and the owners of the platform, they have a unique perspective on how a platform should function in a way that works better not just for the platform as a business, but for the platform workers as people.es.
